‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven’ Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)

Have you ever felt that you weren’t as good a believer as someone who stands up and preaches to a stadium of thousands, or someone who gives their life to be a missionary serving the poor? Don’t judge yourself by someone else’s calling! Some are called in this way, but most go about their daily life, being salt and light in the world around them. Remember that Yeshua didn’t say,’Go and be salt,’ or ‘be a light’. Instead, he said ‘You are the salt of the earth! You are the light of the world’ (Matthew 5:13-14). It is about who you are, not something that you have to conjure up or force. If you are walking with Yehovah, then just by being yourself, you will be lighting up the path for those who stumble in the dark. You won’t be able to help yourself being the preserving salt when you live in a society where its values are rotting away. The theologian John Stott said, ‘It is time for believers to stop blaming the meat of society for going rotten when the preserving salt has been taken out.’ In the same way, if you let a bottle of milk sit out in the summer, would you blame the milk for going sour, or would it be the fault of whoever hadn’t put it in the fridge? Some believers have a tendency to blame society for its ills and immorality, rather than looking around to see how to be involved in implementing positive change. You are naturally salt and light in this world, so allow the taste and the brightness of Yehovah to change the world around you.
