??A very present help in trouble? Psalm 46:1 (ESV)

Yehovah is ?a very present help in time of trouble?. This particular phrase is only found here in the whole of the Bible. In the original, it is very strong and forceful; the Hebrew phrase is me’?d m?ts?’, which literally means ?vehemently present? or ?severely present?. You could read it colloquially to mean that he is actually ‘in your face’! In fact, Yehovah is a lot closer than you think. The famous preacher, Charles Spurgeon wrote on this text, ?Yehovah is almost closer than the trouble is?. Notice that He is found in ?a time of trouble?. Wouldn?t it be more obvious to find Him in a time of Shalom? Many believers are able to know the presence of Yehovah in the good times, but there are many occasions in the Bible that talk about ?the day of trouble?, and on most of them, Yehovah is found to be present and active. In the Tanakh, it describes how ?the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where Yehovah was? (Exodus 20:21). He is faithful in whatever situation or time of life you find yourself in; there is nowhere so dark or far away that He cannot be with you. David says, ?If I say, ?Surely the darkness shall fallon me??Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You? (Psalm 139:11-12). It is often in the darker moments of life that He is the most real. Turn to Him in your dark times, and you will find Him to be there.
